Biography

As a passionate young bassist on the scene, Adam Olszewski draws inspiration from the standard set by his jazz idols. Beginning the cello at age 11, he switched to the bass at 12 after being enamored with its beautiful sound. He started playing jazz within that year, a music that quickly became a channel for his energetic personality and creative spirit. He considers his first influence Ray Brown and is also heavily inspired by great Detroit bass players such as Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, Bob Hurst and Rodney Whitaker, his long-time mentor.

Through his studies at Michigan State University, he had the honor to perform with Jimmy Cobb, Louis Hayes, Conrad Herwig, Brian Lynch, Russell Malone, Rufus Reid, and Tim Warfield. He now continues that education with a Master’s degree at The Juilliard School, where he has been taught by Ben Wolfe and coached by Wynton Marsalis, Marquis Hill, Marc Cary and Dave Douglas. Outside of school, he had the opportunity to open with Christian McBride’s Big Band in a concert starring Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer, as well as participate in the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program (2015.) He debuted as a sideman on Jason Hainsworth’s Third Ward Stories, which also featured Johnathan Blake, Michael Dease, Josh Evans and Glen Zaleski.
